I am often asked: What is spiritual direction? Let me respond by saying that you are spiritual whether or not you are aware of it. Your spirituality, or “sacred story,” is in what you do with the life you received. It shows in how you connect and disconnect from your true self, others, the world, and that which is greater than you.
Another person gazing at your life - a spiritual director - can help you notice your sacred story and the loving invitation of God/Spirit/Christ/Sacred Mystery within it. As you notice the spirit’s presence and activity in your life, a fresh response becomes possible. God is already present in your life in love, but your awareness and response grows the relationship toward fuller life.
The poet and mystic John O’Donohue tells us that “It takes so long to learn to take your place in your own life…The more we recognize the neglected and unseen dimensions of our lives, the more enriched and balanced we become. It takes a lifetime’s work to belong fully in your life.”
As a spiritual director I see directees at the church. I am also an adjunct faculty member at Mercy Center Auburn and see directees at that location.
